Flea Market and Craft Sale a Paradise First

Plan now for the April 2007 Paradise Flea Market and Craft Sale, sponsored by the Paradise Community Association, Inc. This event will be held April 21 on the parking lot of the Emanuel United Methodist Church on Frederick Road in Paradise. Church members plan to hold a bake sale in conjunction with the Flea Market and Craft Sale.

This is THE fundraising event for the PCA for 2007. Purchase a 6’ x 6’ space for $25.00, bring your own table or blanket, and sell your stuff! You keep the proceeds of your sale, and the price for the space goes to the community association. Don’t miss this chance to hold your own little yard sale right on busy Frederick Road where you can get the most traffic available in our community.

Here’s what you need to know to participate:

▪ Date: Saturday, April 21, 2007,

   8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

▪ Cost: $25.00 for a 6’ x 6’ space

March PCA meeting:

Paradise Village” Developer To Address Your Concerns

This month’s meeting will feature the return of George Trowbridge, Jr., owner/developer of the “Paradise Village” new housing development at the intersections of Paradise Avenue, Altamont Avenue, and Maiden Choice Lane.

Mr. Trowbridge and his group have, in the past, been most receptive to input from members of the PCA and neighbors of the construction site. They worked closely with our community to develop a site that meets our needs for pedestrian foot traffic, green space, housing density and design, and property access.

However, as construction continues, problems with the site have developed. These include a serious deterioration of the Paradise Avenue road surface, construction silt appearing in down-site streams, a change in the storm water management pond design, changes in the front detailing of the homes, etc.

Mr. Trowbridge is aware of these issues and will be at our March meeting to address our concerns. He hopes to bring his engineering firm, Matis Warfield, to address the more technical questions.

Come to hear Mr. Trowbridge describe the excitement being generated by these large, expensive and beautiful homes, and find out what outsiders are saying about our community.

President’s Column

by Judy Hess Boitz

Dare I finally say it? WELCOME, SPRING!  I believe the race is finally on. The race to weed, prune, mulch, plant, water, weed, water, water, water, weed, weed, eat the fruits of your work, rake leaves, put the tools away, then let the snow fly! For those of us who garden, the winter rest is over.

For those sports fans among you, its March Madness month, and nothing else matters. Baseball is just around the corner, and a gloriously long season of fly balls, dugout camaraderie, homerun highs, and icy brew on tap is coming soon. But it is not here yet, and right now you’re all about basketball. Enjoy your sport as much as I enjoy the sprouting greenery.

The February PCA meeting brought out an unbelievable attendance of 60 people, making this a standing room only crowd. Captain Spiroff of the Baltimore County Police Department and Officer Bury each spoke about crime locally and in greater Baltimore County. Councilman Moxley answered constituents’ questions. The main discussion was about the Catonsville Rails to Trails project, and passions ran high on both sides of the issue. The Paradise Community Association’s position is one of neutrality, neither opposing nor supporting the project. Many individual members and residents have strong opinions on the proposed trail, and I’m certain this will remain a hot-button issue for some time to come.

One of the wonderful aspects of living in Paradise is that we have a forum where such meetings and discussions can take place. Many of us have lived here for so long that we may take our community for granted. Come to the March meeting to hear how prospective homebuyers in the new Paradise Village view our community. Three of the properties have already been sold, and there is a wait list for the others. One homebuyer commented that she could not believe such a property in such a neighborhood was available. New families are coming to town, and they might one day play a big part in our community association and in our lives.

See you at the meeting on Monday evening.

Special Thanks

The PCA wishes to thanks all of the dedicated newsletter delivery volunteers who braved the treacherous ice and cold to deliver last month’s newsletter. Without these special people, our community would not have the most local of news sources, our own Oasis newsletter.

Paradise Pickers Arise!

March is the time for high winds to blow trash out of dumpsters and trash cans, only to be spread all over the neighboring streets. The ground cover has not yet filled in to hide it; the shrubs that trap the trash have not leafed out.

Unfortunately, Paradise streets and alleys can look pretty trashed in March. Can you spare about an hour this spring to help clean up the mess? Please adopt a street near you, or a section of Frederick Road, and spend an hour picking up and disposing of the litter currently blowing around the neighborhood.

Soon there will be so many beautiful spring blooms decorating the yards of Paradise. Let’s make sure we can see them in all their glory without cardboard, coffee cups and soda cans getting in the way.
